Kane Garden Surfboards, located in San Diego California, has quietly been making high quality surfboards for years and have developed a variety of unique boards that last. Kane Garden’s lead shaper Stu Kenson, began surfing in 1969 and shaped his first board in 1972 and he later opened his own surfboard label called Evening Glass in 1987. Stu Kenson later went on to shape/design for Weber Surfboards, Rusty Surfboards, and Joel Tudor designs and has shaped boards for top professional surfers including Joel Tudor, Rochelle Ballard, Kevin Connelly, and Saxon Boucher. Stu continues to work with San Diego’s up and coming surfers. While Kane Garden Surfboards is most known for their classic looking retro fishes, the company states that “we do not build retro surfboards. Instead, all of our board designs are post modern with the most advanced design features available.” They do offer a few high performance shortboard models as well as longboard models. Their Fish Series is by far their most popular and includes the following models: SK Keel The company claims that all of their surfboards are built with the most advanced design features available. Those advances create tremendous speed in their boards in a wide variety of conditions providing surfers with smooth and easy transitions as well as great paddling ability. Kane Garden surfboards are also available in epoxy models by Boardworks Surf. 22 Comments »Jack, on November 3, 2007 @ 3:16 pm |Larry Mabile designed the all the Fishes at Kane Garden that didn’t work. Go straight my son, turning is bad…… Paul Sheckler, on January 11, 2008 @ 4:35 pm |Well, its nice that you put up that whole spread on Kane Garden, but you left out the most important fact. Larry Mabile was the designer of the Kane Garden Line and their dominant shaper for 15 years before Stu Kensen came along. If you ask anyone other than Stu, they will tell you Larry was the driving force behind Kane Garden. Stu named himself the mastershaper after he bought into the company in 2006. In early 2007, Larry was asked by Stu not to shape for KG anymore which is when he began to pursue his own label. Paul Sheckler, on January 11, 2008 @ 4:38 pm |And to Jack(comment Nov 3)….Seems to me that Stu paid you to say that. If you’ve ever tried a Larry Mabile TWZ, youd know better…… Neal, on January 12, 2008 @ 8:55 am |Paul, can you please explain to everyone who you are? Perhaps you can add some credibility to your name? Aloha Neal, on January 12, 2008 @ 8:57 am |I got the following email from Paul Sheckler: I posted several comments yesterday adding true information to your write up of Kane Garden. I think its unfair you didnt allow it to stay up. Why are you not includung the true story of Kane Garden Surfboards Design? You even allow someone to bag on Larry Mabile. I will post every day until you either allow it to stay up of change your website. ———— I wonder who paid this guy to say that? Neal, on January 12, 2008 @ 8:58 am |Guess he doesn’t know that all comments are moderated to protect against spam. Well for users who didn’t know that…your comments are moderated so no spam and keep it clean. Mahalo. sean, on May 20, 2008 @ 5:55 am |larry’s boards are awesome. I have bought two twinzers from him and they have changed my surfing. Haybarn, on July 11, 2008 @ 1:43 pm |Arno is that like Sterno in alley behind Mission, PB Point is not the world, not even Law St., Open your mind and be free Paul, on July 30, 2008 @ 3:56 pm |Larmo’s boards are right up there with ANYONE making fish-style boards. Who cares about KG. Get a Mabile and see for yourself who the man is. Kevin, on August 6, 2008 @ 3:38 pm |Riding the same KG(larry’s model) second gen twinzer for the past five years I can honestly say it has been the funnest surfboard I have ever ridden. It’s been a gift really. The board handles everything from knee high to overhead ++ Black’s. Love the feel of this boad. Somebody said something about going straight and sraight would be boring and I definitely am not. Whatever, don’t hate keep riding what you want. I just ordered a custom I love it some much with exactly the same dims. 2cent Jack, on October 14, 2008 @ 12:58 pm |Want the real KG story? The label and name Kane Garden was established by Harlan Patterson, owner of Pacific Surf Glass, back in the 1990’s. It was a small local PB label that found its way onto a bunch of longboards, mid-lengths and a few fishes. Then, Peter Johnson was brought in from Rusty as a majority owner and manager of PSG, which was predominantly a production glassing shop. Peter was the architect of the KG evolution by bringing in Larry Mabile, Stu Kenson, and others to shape various boards in the line. The late Dave Russell and La Jolla’s Richard Kenvin were brought in to help out with marketing, including the limited KG clothing line that was produced around 2004-2005. While Larry was the undisputed “go to” for the twin keels and twinzers, many of the longboards, midlengths (like the Orca), and other shapes were Peter Johnson’s own. In 2006, Stu bought into the company, and then he and Harlan pushed Peter out. Stu then did the Boardworks deal, cut off ties with Larry, and ultimately, ran the company into the ground. Last I heard, there was a lawsuit between Harlan, Stu, and Peter over ownership of the whole mess. Rumors are that Peter’s back in charge of KG, but there is no more PSG. Anyone have more info? Sarah Peeples, on November 9, 2008 @ 10:56 am |I recently purchased a Stu Kenson board, signed #64 for Dana LeDanne and signed by stu, can anyone tell me about this board. PJ, on December 9, 2008 @ 1:03 pm |I want to set the record strait that Kane Garden was founded by Harlan Patterson and original owner of Pacific Surf Glass and Kane Garden surfboards. KG was created by Harlan (not Larry Mabile) and it was a small local label in San Diego buiding San Diego style fishes, speed eggs, and longboards. It was a very successful surfboard factory and glass shop with KG as the shop label built mostly for the local surfers and private label brands. shawnholder, on December 17, 2008 @ 12:12 pm |have been riding delray superboards for two years, best boards ever! they are fast loose wave catching machines. C.delgado, on December 18, 2008 @ 12:32 pm |well……I recently got a cold call from peter johnson to purchase his boards in my shop. When he was running KG…he used to charge my credit card double for a single order. Then he would blame it on his secretary. He’s a crook! Then I asked If larmo was going to shape for him again and he said yes…I called LArmo and he said he would never work for that snake in the grass again. Be careful public. PJ and Rick sharp are liars and thieves. c.delgado, on December 18, 2008 @ 12:36 pm |PS…stu…you need to let the public know how PJ robbed you too. JJ, on January 5, 2009 @ 4:04 pm |I’ve been doing business with PJ for almost twenty years and he has done nothing but build great boards along with great service. If there was ever a problem it was taken care of usually to my benifit……..I don’t know what happen but when he left KG it fell apart. I look forward to carring KG again now that he’s back. BB, on January 5, 2009 @ 4:34 pm |Like it was said, keep it cool and positive, everyone has moved on and there are always two sides to a story. Trying to hurt someones business with unsubstanciated irresponsible comments causes great exposure………. you should check with your attorney on that one.
