BACK IN 1963/1964 I RODE A DEWEY WEBER LONG BOARD. NOTHING MORE STABLE TO RIDE AT THE REDONDO BEACH BREAKWATER DURING THE LARGE WINTER BREAK. TO BE ABLE TO GO FROM TOP TO BOTTOM THEN UP TO THE NOSE AND HANG AROUND FOR AWHILE, WELL THERE IS NOTHING LIKE IT. I HAVE SURFED NOW FOR SOME 50 YEARS OF MY LIFE AND I HAVE OWNED BOARDS BY JACOBS AND BING AS WELL, BUT MY WEBER WAS MY FAVORITE. I REMEBER WHEN DEWEY'S SURF SHOP WAS ON PCH IN HERMOSA BEACH WHERE I USED TO HANG OUT.

Hi guys, just a note having run into this site. Only met (saw?) Dewey once in his del Rey shop. He didn't seem to have much time for a fat kid from El Segundo, but he had this door sign ("Yes, we're closed" and on the reverse "Sorry, we're open!")which, at the time, seemed very cool! My older brothers spent more time down there in the early 60's and took up surfing with neighbor Dean Fermin.

I was on the Dewey Skateboard Team. We performed at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium for the opening of Surf Films in the day. We went to High Schools and performed. We competing one Summer in 1963 on a Television Show Called Surfs Up and we competed against Hobie and other teams. We won 2nd place overall.I did a high jump trick of 3'8'' which was tauted to be the world record at the time. Several members on our team had the first huge skateboard with eight sets of wheels. I had my own fiberglass custom board made for me which I still have. I also had my own special surfboard designed and I was part of a Surf Club called TOC that surfed the La Ballona Creek and Manhattan Beach area. I won my High School Surf Contes (Culver City). I have pictures to show. I have pictures of my Dewey Weber Skateboard Team shirt and of me doing headstands and handstands. Anybody interesting in seeing or learning more. E-mail me!

Nice blog entry about Deweys. I might post a link to it in my eSanClemente.com blog. Perhaps you can blog about eSanClemente if you like it? Perhaps as a resource to surfing in SC.

Cheers.
